Q. What software is used and could I just do the audit myself?
A. We use Link Research Tools, Ahrefs and SEMRush. Yes you could do the audit yourself. However, you would be missing out on years of experience from analyzing thousands of link profiles. With some tools there is quite an intense learning cycle too. Also, the combined cost of the software is quite high ($1000+/month). Using our Link Audit service is a very cost-effective way to keep your link profile clean.
Q. I don’t build many links, so why do I need a Link Audit?
A. Most sites, especially successful ones, attract spammy links. These are often from sites that use scripts to scrape your content. Although Google says that they are good at ignoring such links, in practice, we don’t see that to be true. Indeed we have seen some sites get their traffic obliterated when the majority of their links come from scrapers.
Q. What sort of links are the worst?
A. There are a lot of reasons why a link could be considered bad. For example:
  1. A link on a page that Google has de-indexed
  2. A link on a page that contains a virus, malware or a malicious script
  3. A link on a page from a domain that has a huge negative link velocity
  4. A link on a page from a domain that has a huge number of backlinks, but minimal traffic
There are many other reasons, but generally, you want to avoid having your links on pages that are either very weak or are penalized in some way.
Q. How quickly can I see the effect of a disavow file?
A. A disavowed link is taken into account when Google recrawls that link. For this reason, the results vary massively. It can be anything from a couple of weeks to never. You should think about the disavow file being like insurance to protect you from bad inbound links.
Q. How often should a Link Audit be done?
A. This depends on how aggressively you build links and the level of traffic you have. For most niches, quarterly should be sufficient or even annually for smaller sites.
